Judo has its roots in Ju-jitsu, which goes back many centuries in Japanese history.

It was developed by Dr. Jigoro Kano towards the end of the 19th century.

Judo is an Olympic sport, first included in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

The word “Judo” literally translated means “the gentle way”, unlike other martial arts there is no kicking, punching or striking in Judo.

Judo is practiced on thick mats which are designed to absorb the opponents fall.

The aim in Judo is to either throw your opponent onto their back or to hold your opponent on their back for 20 seconds. In both cases it is a requirement to use skill & control.

The seniors in addition are permitted to apply arm locks & neck locks.

GETTING STARTED

It is important to start correctly with a qualified Judo Coach.

The British Judo Association is the official governing body for Judo in the UK, which is recognized by the Olympic Association & The Sports Council.

All BJA clubs are required to have qualified coaches who have to fulfill strict revalidation requirements including DBS checks to ensure the very highest standards are maintained.

To start off, all you need to wear is something clean but old because it will be pulled about, jumper  & jeans or tracksuit are fine.

Judo suits (judogi) are reinforced  in all the right places to take into account the grappling content of our sport. These can be purchased through the club.
